POP KILLS by Piers Twomey (pronounced ‘too me’)
DIGITAL ONLY RELEASE – GRAB IT ONLINE at pierstwomey.bandcamp.com

Australian songsmith Piers Twomey carved out a bit of a niche on his 2012 experimental-chamber folk debut album, Strange Advice, drawing some unexpected media attention (“Lovely new folk music” – Triple J, “Quietly charming songwriting” - Rolling Stone, "For fans of Kings Of Convenience” - Sydney Morning Herald, “Luminous” – Drum Media).

Since then, Piers has been gradually weaving together more intricately layered songs and compositions that will appear on a second modern folk album (in 2014), once again helmed by Strange Advice producer and confidant Tony Dupé (Saddleback, Holly Throsby, Jamie Hutchings).

But why wait ‘til then? Piers is now releasing a stop-gap interim project: the POP KILLS EP with his band, The Advisors in tow. You see - Piers is best described as a folk songwriter who just loves to fuzz rock out on occasion. His music moves between the stark minimalism of Grand Salvo, Bill Callahan and Kings of Convenience – and the cerebral/visceral guitar pop of Joe Pernice, Elvis Costello and The Lemonheads.

So here is POP KILLS, his delirious ode to 90’s indie – where Piers pays homage to a cast of his formative heroes like Teenage Fanclub, You Am I, Smog (the one cover on the EP), Guided By Voices, Dinosaur Jr and the like. Of course – the end result comes out sounding more like Piers Twomey than exactly any of those artists, but that’s inspiration for you.

In many ways, POP KILLS recalls Piers’ pre-solo indie rock bands: Transporter and The Fragments. After laying these tracks down in one weekend (no click tracks!) at Sydney’s Zen Studios, the EP was mixed and mastered in Berlin by Damian Press – member of successful Australian group Expatriate, and Piers’ long time friend and Transporter / Fragments co-founder.

POP KILLS represents the other half of Piers’s musical fascination – it’s the art pop yin to his reflective folk yang.
